We all know that each of us reading this blog have been called to help God’s children in Uganda.  We want to feed them today, but more than that, we would like them to be able to care for themselves in the years to come.

By sponsoring them each month we are providing nourishing food for today, and a Christian education which teaches them of the unfailing love of our Father.  What can we do to enable a child to provide for his/ her own future?

One way is the gift of a goat…

By giving a child the gift of a goat (or two), you empower a child to provide for their own future.  The goat will belong to the designated child.  Goats multiply quickly, and with care, the child will soon have several goats they can sell or continue to raise.  When the child leaves school, up to 5 goats will go with that child.  Any additional goats will remain at the school to be given to other children, as they are ready to take on that responsibility.

With tears in his eyes, he kept saying it is impossible…impossible!  “How can someone I have not seen, not known for long, who I am not related to, ever think of empowering me this way? I am now one of the rich men in Uganda!!”

He went on to say, “Out of these two goats, God is going to multiply them into a herd of more than 500. Pastor John, it seems from your trip I have stood to benefit more than others.  May God bless that family, may he give them all they need and may God give me a chance to see them and personally thank them.”

It was at this time that I (John) discovered that Moses is a brother to Isaac Buyinza!!! It is amazing that Isaac had told and directed his (then) suffering brother to us!!!! I am so happy to now know this.

GOAT FAQ’s:

1.  What is the cost of these local goats? About $75 each.

2.  May I purchase one or two for my sponsored child? YES! Out of funds from the SWAP-IT project, stables have been built for the goats and other farm animals for the school. A water tank has been donated to water the goats, so we are ready to go!

3.  If I do not sponsor a child, may I still donate a goat? YES!  Many children who attend the school are poor, but not sponsored.  Giving them goats to care for and take with them upon graduating is a great way to extend sustainability to others in the community.

4.  Should any-age child receive a goat? Absolutely!  Older children will have the main responsibility for caring for the goats, teaching the younger children how to do so, and as the goats reproduce, its offspring will be given to other children at the school.  Blessing a young child with a goat will bless many other children as well!

You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 2 Cor 9:11-12

Ok everyone…it’s the summer! We all know what that means – time for some fun, right? As we enjoy time with friends and family, please remember that there is an urgent food crisis in Uganda and throughout most of Africa right now—remember the boy who hadn’t had an egg in 5 years?  Others go without eating for one day, two days, three days…  THAT is the epitome of raw hunger—and we can DO something about it!

This is not meant to be a guilt trip of any kind but an opportunity for us to creatively find ways to give food to these families who are hungry and weak as we begin our days full of energy and well-fed.

How about we swap something we have planned this week (or summer) in order to feed these precious, hungry people. Are you in? Here are some ideas:

Who has plans to go out for lunch or dinner this week? Would you consider swapping your meal(s) out to feed the hungry? Get this: The $50 dinner that you swap can provide 1,111 nutritious meals! A $150 dinner, 3,333 meals.

Who is planning on shopping for new summer clothes this weekend? Would you consider swapping your shopping?!  Save $75 in shopping, and provide another 1,667 meals for the orphanage in Uganda!

Who has a mani-pedi or any other spa/salon service planned? Would you swap it out to show the love of Jesus?  There’s another 888-1,777 meals.

Who is planning on paying a babysitter so you can go out this weekend? How about swapping babysitting services with a friend so that you both can donate the money you saved? A $40 savings in babysitting can provide 888 meals for the orphanage!!

Who is looking forward to that Saturday morning coffee at the coffee shop? How about swapping your $5.00 coffee drink for 111 meals for hungry people? Incredible, huh?!

Who has plans to catch a movie this weekend? How about swapping a movie night out (2 tickets & popcorn) for 667 meals?? Hard to believe that sacrificing one movie can give so many people food!

Planning a road trip or a vacation with a stay at hotels? Stay at cheaper hotels, spend one less night, skip a road trip…and with a savings of $200, swap out for 4,440 meals.

Who is planning a trip to the local ice cream shop? How about swapping your $10 ice cream visit to fill provide 222 meals?

Here’s the scoop 🙂  We’re working with John, Seggy & Mark and the other leaders at Nkumba to grow food that will feed the children for a lifetime.  We are raising $100,000 (2.2 million meals) that will provide another 20 acres of farm land, irrigation for all 50 acres, (last crop of maize died), a tractor, a small used car to get to the land, 700 avocado and mango trees, 700 fig, citrus and nut trees, 1000 chickens, 8 milking cows, 4 milking goats, a BIG kitchen (has to be big to cook for 2000 kiddos!), and, oh yes, a home—stables and coops—for the chickens, cows and goats.

When we feed 2000 children 3 meals a day for an entire year, it breaks down to 4.5 cents a meal. The cool thing is, this will feed them not just for a year, but for a lifetime!

I came that they may have LIFE and have it ABUNDANTLY! John 10:10

One year ago today, Fred Bukenya, a leader with Nkumba Ministries, and also the man earmarked as the future pastor of the church at Nkumba, was in a terrible accident.  A lorry crashed into their vehicle, and Fred was severely injured.  It was unknown for several months whether he would regain brain function or the use of his eyes.

Today, one year later, he has written a letter of thanks to John Mugabi.  It’s so good, I thought I’d share it.  It gave me a little glimpse into the life of this man Fred, whom I have yet to meet.

Hezekiah was informed by Isaiah, a servant of God, that his time had come and so he had to die!!! Imagine a situation like this! He was a faithful servant of the Lord, and on hearing this looked nowhere else but to the Mighty giver of life. After many cries in prayer, The LORD extended his life with numerous years.Wow!!!

The wonderful Savior had helped him not necessarily that he would not die but this extension did a lot of good to the person of Hezekiah and the nation of Israel at large. It did help him check his standing before The Almighty. 2 Kings 20:1-11.

Fred, one year ago

Its now 365 days ever since God gave me a second chance!!!!. To many people my life seemed gone.

During this time in the hospital, I could do nothing that Hezekiah did, but many, led by a servant of God called Mugabi John, did it for me!!!

Numerous prayers were forwarded to Him who gives life in abundance and I survived.

Pastor imagine the provisions The Almighty enabled you do for me on my death bed. The spirit you put to manifest can only be paid back by the Almighty.

One thing I want to say to you brother is that I can never repay what you did with others materially, but I believe and trust the Lord for his numerous provisions towards you brethren.

Brother, words alone cannot show my gratefulness in abundance, but I promise sincerity towards every ministry work. Besides He did this not because I was  good, but all by His grace.

Like it helped Hezekiah check his standing before the Almighty, I seek his grace to help me check well my standing before Him and maintenance of life as desired by Him.

May the Lord bless you Pastor, the Elders, the brothers who stood with me at the hospital and the entire church community. YOU DID A FORMIDABLE JOB.

Letter from John Mugabi

Dear partners,

I thank God for the opportunity I had to visit the United States during the months of April-May 2009. The trip has refreshed me in a powerful way, and given me a new understanding of the word hope.

I know that many believers have come to a point in their lives when hope for the future is unclear, and have been greatly encouraged by the wonderful reviving text of Jeremiah 29:11 ‘‘For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’’

Many readers tend to ignore the context of those words and claim the ‘promises’ of the text, which is part of a letter (vv. 1-23) to a people in exile, under harsh conditions, longing to return home. These hopeless people are reminded that God is with them, and actually has plans for them, even their future.

That is how I have often felt when working with our orphaned children.  As Christians, we know that our hope is a spiritual one, yet with physical implications. Therefore, by helping provide education, health, and a shelter, the children are given hope, that they can have a future and a prosperous one; that is indeed a great contribution to their lives.

But we are also giving them something more: by helping provide a Christian-based education (as we do at Nkumba Schools), health services, and a shelter, (a home grounded in Christian values), we are creating an opportunity for them to have a life-changing experience, to enter a relationship that has eternal implications, to know God, to have Him, and to serve Him. We believe that nothing gives someone more hope than discovering their purpose in life.

My special thanks goes to my sister Cara who planned the entire trip.

I am particularly glad that I was able to meet the Brueggemans.  They were my hosts in Arizona and I enjoyed so much their love and care, it was too special; I have special memories of the wonderful breakfast they offered me everyday.

Finally, on this trip I was able to share the Gospel with many Americans like I have never done before– on the trains, airport lounges, and on the planes; I believe God for harvest as He touches their hearts. Our hope in His transforming power inspires us to use all the chances we get, and like I said always “we had better do what we can when we can.”

Once again, thank you for being part of the present, and the future of our humble ministry, which continues to grow and impact many, bringing hope into otherwise hopeless lives. Your support means we will continue providing these children with shelter, health and education, and prepare them to go back to the communities, as changed people, transformed by the love of God, as ambassadors of Christ, taking love and hope into the world.

During the entire Holocaust, 11 million people were murdered under the brutal regime of the Third Reich led by Adolph Hitler.

Every year, 10 million children under the age of five die from hunger…from dirty water…from malaria…from unclean birthing conditions.

We are living in the middle of a holocaust–only, if possible, worse.  More lives are being claimed, yet there is not even a totalitarian dictator standing in our way.  It’s only our complacency that keeps us from ending this tragedy.

Each day, 26,000 mothers grieve the loss of their child…a grief we all know would leave us almost unable to breathe.  Where do these mothers live? Where are these 10 million children dying each year?

The countries listed below have the highest under-age-5 mortality rate in the world, all ranging between 10 and 26%.  All but two of the countries are in Africa. (In comparison, the U.S. has an under-age-5 mortality rate of .08%)**

It is the world’s greatest holocaust.  Will we speak up, reach out, set aside our personal pursuits and comforts to bring the love of Jesus, or will we turn a blind eye?

It is our deeply-rooted love and joy in the Lord that will cause us to want to give, to beg to give, to search for ways to give–so that living water pours out of us to meet the needs of those who are living in the middle of this holocaust.

If you love me, you will obey what I command. John 14:15

As you may know, George Muller, who was a passionate evangelist and cared for over 10,000 orphans in his lifetime, is one of our heroes.

George Muller believed in, preached, and lived out the pursuit of happiness in God. He owned nothing, took no salary, lived the simplest of lives (materially), and he was, by his own testimony, the happiest of men in Bristol, England.

“Oh how different if the joy in God leads us to any little act of self-denial, how gladly do we do it then.”

As we talk about self-denial, selling things, living simply so that others may simply live, we are aware these things will only happen if we are first happy in God, being fully- convinced that what we are gaining is infinitely more satisfying than what we are giving up.

Being fully-convinced that feeding hungry children is more satisfying than buying a newer car.  Being fully-convinced that providing medical care to the sick is more gratifying than getting that spa treatment or buying that new outfit.  Being fully convinced that bringing clean water to an entire community is more rewarding than owning a bigger home.

If we are not convinced of that we will not do it.  If we are not convinced of that, we ARE in bondage to a lie.

The enemy of our souls, the father of lies, wants us to walk in deception, believing the lie that our happiness is found in the “stuff ” of this world.  The only way to disprove the lie is to try things God’s way.  So, whatever that next step of obedience is, that thing our flesh doesn’t want to part with, the sacrifice we don’t want to make…that is the thing we must do to discover the truth:  God’s ways are not only right, they are best!

Dear Friends,

Praise the Lord From Whom All Blessings Flow!!

I am happy to see your obedience to God through works of mercy. Our mandate comes from Scripture: Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of those who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly, defend the rights of the poor and needy. Prov 31:8-9.

After Peter confessed that Jesus was Christ, Jesus promised that he would build his Church on the solid rock of that confession.The keys of the Kingdom of Heaven are given to the Church.

The Church is the beloved bride of Christ. Matt 9:14-15 We should not see the church as a weak and fragile institution, even when its local expression may seem so.

We picture the Church triumphant–God’s agency carrying the mandate to bring the good news to the ends of the earth confidently, with promise that we will succeed. Mark 16:15-18.

It is the church that must be salt and light to the communities all around the world. We should all serve as a bridge between the different parts of the body of Christ to enable her to fulfill her destiny.

Like the early church who felt it only right to help their poor brothers and sisters in Jerusalem during their time of hardship (2 Corinthians 8:1-15), it’s only right today for the resource-rich parts of the Church to partner with the resource-poor parts of the Church, so that the mission may advance and Jesus be glorified.

Let us then speak against injustice, let’s defend the cause of the poor.

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. John 3:36

There’s an inseparable correlation between belief and obedience all throughout the Bible. Here it is again. Belief yields eternal life; disobedience yields death and wrath.

Let’s follow John’s challenge now…this very weekend let’s choose obedience, which yields life–for us and for the poor. In Luke 12, we find one of Jesus’ commands. “Sell your possessions and give to the poor.“

Will you ask the Lord what He would have you sell first? There’s no question of “if” He would have any of us sell possessions. He’s already made that clear! He always asks for our first-fruits. What is the thing that is most valuable to us? Are we willing to part with it? Obedience is often a struggle. Let’s not get bogged down in the struggle–that’s just our flesh. We know the truth. Our flesh has been crucified with Christ. As a good friend said recently, “Tell your flesh to shut-up!”

Let’s aim high. That will be different for each of us, based on what we possess.  Sell something (or things) worth $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, $100,000.  Impossible?

That power at work within us is the Holy Spirit.  He IS able to do far immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, BUT it is only done according to the measure of the Holy Spirit at work within us. We can quench the Spirit through sin or we can allow Him to work through obedience and surrender.

NEEDS MET SO FAR!

• Most time-sensitive need of $25,000 for 6 new classrooms shells has been met! Muslim influence is increasing in Uganda, and these classrooms will allow the school to share Christ with more young people.   Nkumba Christian Schools offer Christ-centered education, daily chapels, counseling and after-school Bible clubs.  We want to bring the youth of Uganda into THIS environment to meet the LIVING God!
• Three university students have been sponsored–these are young men targeted to take over parts of the ministry in several years so John can focus solely on prison evangelism
• 10 new children have been sponsored.
• 1 seminary student has been sponsored
  
• New microphones and a projector have been donated.
• The Phoenix sister-school has given a love-offering and several classes have raised money.  We’ll dedicate a post to them in a few weeks when school is out!

The board members and volunteers of Remember the Poor convened in Munds Park, Arizona this past weekend.  John Mugabi, the leader of the ministry in Uganda, is here in the U.S. and shared with us throughout the meeting.

One thing in particular I will not forget.

He shared the story of a young teenage boy who had come to the school/orphanage looking for help–food, education, etc.

In helping this boy, they gave him an egg–one egg–and he said it was the first egg he had eaten in 5 years.

Can you imagine?

“What, therefore, is our task today? Should I answer “Faith, hope and love?” That sounds beautiful. But I would say – courage. No, even that is not challenging enough to be the whole truth. Our task today is recklessness. For what we Christians lack is not psychology or literature… we lack a holy rage… The ability to rage when justice lies prostrate on the streets, and when the lie rages across the face of the earth… a holy anger about the things that are wrong in the world. To rage against the ravaging of God’s earth and and the destruction of God’s people. To rage when little children must die of hunger, while the tables of the rich are sagging with food. …To rage against COMPLACENCY. To restlessly seek that recklessness that will challenge and seek to change human history until it conforms to the norms of the kingdom of God.”

This is why we do what we do–to conform our lives, this place called earth, to the norms of the kingdom of God.  This is exactly how Jesus taught us to pray (and to live).  “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

This is why we are raising money for chicken coops and chickens and goats and cows and more farmland…to feed the least of these, to bring the love of Jesus to those who do not know Him. To END the tragic deaths of 26,000 children a day–unnecessary deaths resulting from insufficient food, unclean water sources, malaria, etc. Stupid deaths. Would we really put up with this if it were our own children dying?  Who of us would not sell our stuff and change our lifestyle? Where is our holy rage?!

1200 children attend or live at the Nkumba school/orphanage. About 600 are orphaned. Many more are abjectly poor and lacking food.

We want to help the orphanage support itself.

The orphanage can become self-sustaining by growing their own food, by raising their own animals, by having the proper vehicles to transport children, by having enough classrooms and dormitories…

The leadership on the ground in Uganda simply needs the resources to get the correct infrastructure in place–resources which have been heaped upon this nation–resources not meant for our own pursuits and pleasures, but meant to be used to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22
